Culture
The city of Birmingham is at the center of Alabaman culture and arts, since numerous art galleries, ballet companies, major opera, and symphony orchestras all convene in the largest city in the state. Many visitors revel in the delights of the Birmingham Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the state, and enjoy the sounds of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in their home venue Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts.
History
Perhaps best known for its role in the civil rights movement, Birmingham's historical contribution extends further into the past, with its founding in 1871 and subsequent rapid growth in the early 1900s. Today's Birmingham is restoring some of the early interest in the city, and has adopted the tagline "the diverse city," showing how far the city's come since the events of the 1960s.
